Interesting article, Sam, and I love to hear about your writing journey. I have a manuscript, written years ago that languishes in my summer house, which next doors cat sleeps on. So far I have resisted the temptation to rewrite it.

Such a great post, Sam. I got 45k words into a novel before realising, not only was it not working, but in fact i no longer had the heart for that genre. As for the early stages of writing, like you i knew nothing until i was shown by a friend. The advice about doing courses os priceless, and i’m now fortunate enough to be doing a BA in English literature with creative writing. It’s a huge eye opener, but worth it. Not everyone has to go to this extreme, but i know what i want. I was very lucky with my first novel in finding a home with it through a small indie publisher (crooked cat), which in turn has also taught me a lot. And by the way, despite finding a publisher for it, i despise the book! (My book, that is, not yours). Thanks for this post.

I love reading your posts about your writing journey, Sam, because it so honest and from the heart. Just like life in general, the route is never straight but the meanderings are a story in themselves and helpful advice.
