Try not to worry, Kerry – I have read lots of HQDigital books and they are all real, quality reads. Your editor wouldn’t let it out there if it wasn’t tip top 🙂 I understand your worries though. You just have to try to remember that it is an impossibility for everyone to like your book. Go see a Harry Potter or Bridget Jones book on Amazon – all books have their fair share of bad reviews. Thanks for the encouraging post – what you say is so true. But I’m on the wrong side of those bad reviews, just waiting for them to trickle in. And praying there’s not a flood. My e-book The Artist’s Muse went up on NetGalley last week and I hope someone likes it. Though I’ve heard nothing yet. And I do so know what you mean about your first book! To hit the desired word count alone makes me feel deserving of praise and I’m desperately in need of some. All 90,000 of my personally chosen words are out there shivering in the cold. Some of them must be good.Mustn’t they? I’ve loved writing, and i know that’s important, and I know I have so much to learn. But that doesn’t stop me hoping that the reviewers will be gentle with me. And enjoy my book.

Fabulous post. It really helps to read about your struggles to get started and I’m sure many, like me, are grateful for your honesty and your wisdom in how to deal with setbacks.
My book is due for release in early August and I’ll bear in mind your advice when bad reviews hit me, as I’m sure they will at some point – hopefully not too many! 😀

Thanks very much, Tracy. And try not to take that negative review to heart – if it was personal and insulting, then it is not worth your time. Not everyone is going to like your work and the one good thing about bad reviews is that the more you get, the more you understand that, and they don’t hurt quite so much. I know it is hard, though. Thanks as always for being so honest about how hard it is to become a successful author – and keep pushing on during those early days of constant rejection I haven’t had anywhere near as many reviews as you for my two non-fiction books. Most have been good, but boy does that negative review hurt. It felt like a very personal attack. I don’t think I’m fully over it yet! I really enjoy your blog posts, by the way.
